18th January 2010 will mark 30 years since the controversial fire that claimed many lives and left many questioning the quality of the police investigation into the deaths. There are those that say it was an accident and others, a deliberate racist attack the authorities couldn’t be bothered to investigate!

The New Cross Fire was a devastating house fire which killed 13 young black people during a birthday party in New Cross, southeast London on Sunday January 18, 1981. The black community were shocked by the indifference of the white population, and accused the London Metropolitan Police of covering up the cause, which they suspected was an arson attack motivated by racism; the protests arising out of the fire led to a mobilisation of black political activity.

No10 Security refused deaths in custody letter

The United Families and Friends Campaign UFFC, a coalition of families and friends of those who have died in the custody of police, prison and psychiatric hospital officials, organised a procession to Downing Street to give a letter to the Prime Minister. The police refused to let Samantha Rigg-David in Downing Street and they refused to accept it.

The letter was taped to the gate; a copy will be sent by post; it is reproduced below. Whether the decision not to accept the letter was entirely a police operational one or a political one

12th annual protest against deaths in police & prison custody

The United Family and Friends Campaign (UFFC) staged a protest march from Trafalgar Square to Downing St today. They are brought together by a common bond of allegedly having had a friend or family member die in police custody. London, UK on 30th October 2010.

UFFC is a group who have been brought together by a common bond… They have all lost a friend or family member due to what they claim, was mistreatment by the police whilst in custody. The march from Trafalgar Square to Downing Street was a solemn affair. Approx 100 protesters marched in complete silence with banners fluttering gently in the breeze.
